Nearly five years ago, as The Smashing Pumpkins entered what would be their final year as a band, BILLY CORGAN started writing poetry. Corgan found himself inspired by the limitless possibilities this medium provided for his creativity. ?What is wonderful about poetry is that its scope is multi-dimensional. It can have any rhythm, length?calamity without any constriction to form,? says Corgan. Now, with Blinking with Fists, Corgan emerges, ready to share his poetic voice with the world with a collection of his poetry that will be released in October 2004 (Faber and Faber/October 2004/$18.00). Denise Oswald, Senior Editor at Faber and Faber, Inc. says, ?I'm thrilled to be publishing Billy, as is everyone here at Faber and FSG. As we see it, Blinking with Fists is a natural progression in the house's longstanding support of poetry and the arts. Billy adds a contemporary, alternative voice to an overall program that has published a broad range of poets, from the likes of Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Pinsky to Gary Snyder and August Kleinzahler. With Billy's work, we'll be able to reach out to an entirely new audience while expanding the parameters of the genre itself.? Corgan?s poetic voice emerges from the same place as the lyrics he has written in the past, the same heart and soul. But, the voices differ greatly, distinct from one another. ?I think that the poems have their own personality and are a lot closer in spirit to me as a person,? says Corgan, ?as opposed to my song lyrics which I believe deal more in pieces of me.? Corgan?s poetry finds inspiration in life, love, the pursuit of joy, God and spirituality, drawing from an introspective and reflective place. Poems like The Poetry of My Heart, The Restless Word, and The Song of the Earth highlight the unique vision, feelings and emotions that Corgan possesses on his journey through life. Corgan has already shared his poetry with a sold out audience in his native Chicago where he performed at the Poetry Center of Chicago?s 31st annual reading series and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Corgan is currently completing his first solo album to be released Spring 2005 on Warner Brothers Records.
