Offered by the International House of Blues Foundation® (IHOBF), the Blues SchoolHouse transforms the House of Blues®-Chicago venue (329 N. Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL, 60654) into a multimedia classroom for 5th-12th grade students and their teachers. Combining live music and visual arts, the program teaches about American history and culture through an exploration of the blues, blues-inspired music and folk art. The interactive musical presentation traces the history of blues music from its roots in African culture through its emergence and evolution as a unique American music form and highlights African American cultural contributions. Performed by the IHOBF-Chicago Blues SchoolHouse Band, which is comprised of local musicians, the program features music by Bessie Smith, Thomas A. Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters, Mary J. Blige, Ko Ko Taylor, and many more. Students also learn about and view art from the House of Blues art collection, which features many works by self-taught artists from the American South. Participating teachers receive a classroom guide that supports them in integrating content from the program into their classrooms.
