Courtney was born in England but he and his family moved to Seattle, Washington, when he was 4. He returned to the United Kingdom when he was 15. Courtney previously led the British indie band called SleeperCell, who featured on Channel 4's Orange Unsigned competition, before fronting the indie band Dive Bella Dive, who signed to Island Records and performed at the Download Festival in 2012.
