A former major label record executive turned producer, composer and performer, Johnny Coppola's music is unique as it is original and new, yet it harkens back to the post-war Jet Age and the heyday of The Great American Songbook. One might call the original compositions Neo-Standards.
Coppola covers the great songs of the past while mixing the great standards into a fresh listening experience. His first album entitled Hollywood Indigo met with critical acclaim when released in 2004. It's a concept album with brilliantly arranged original music, songs from the Great American songbook and rat pack influenced poetry describing his own life and loves as well as the life and times of Frank Sinatra with a major tip of the cap to the writers and arrangers of the day. His newest released entitled A Shot To The Kisser is also conceptual as its arc sweeps from the happy beginnings of love to the eventual loss of it. The album also contains a rather haunting version of the great standard Angel Eyes as well as the Johnny Mercer classic One For My Baby. Johnny is aided by the brilliant piano work of Grammy award winning pianist and arranger Bill Cunliffe as well as guitarist John Chiodini, who share some writing credits on many of the original tunes.
When you listen to Johnny's music you can hear the influences clearly; those of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald Dinah Washington, Joe Williams, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Tony Bennett along with so many more. He's intent on carrying the torch of the Great American Songbook while creating new music touched by his very own style.
