Sam Colgate is a New Orleans based drummer and composer. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Loyola University, where he had the opportunity to study with local drum legends Wayne Maureau and Johnny Vidacovich, as well as with the world-class percussionists Jim Atwood and Dave Salay of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. As a performer, Sam is well steeped in the jazz tradition, but can also be found playing other styles including funk, R&B, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and neo-soul. As a composer, Sam draws inspiration from an equally diverse array of music, from jazz greats such as Wayne Shorter, to contemporary artists like D’Angelo, and even classical composers like Frederic Chopin.
